Middle East Used as Test Market Platform
by Robert Colvin

British-based home products and healthcare producer Reckitt Benckiser (Slough), makers of brand including Airwick, woolite, dettol and Lysol, chose the Middle Eastern and North African countries as the test market to determine acceptance of the blow molded high density polyethylene container with a gooseneck dispenser for its harping brand cleaner.

The new packaging is covered with a full shrink sleeve, giving more area for product information than the adhesive labels used previously. The Eight-colors PETG labels, imported from Japan, are being shrunk on 500, 750 and 1000ml containers processed by blow-molder Duplas Al Sharq (Dubai, UAE).

Mohammed Nofal General Manager at Duplas says the shrink sleeves give a better product differentiation on the shelf. Nofal says the packaging, commercialized in the region in late 2007, came after ordering special mold made in Dubai and $ 500,000 investment to redesign Duplas processing equipment, particularly to accommodate the correct bottleneck design so the shrink sleeves fit without wrinkles or creases.

The sleeves is shrunk in the steam tunnel, Reckitt Benckiser Arabia will allow for a three year test programme to determine consumers acceptance of the newly decorated bottle, and will then decide if it will use the same concept in other markets.
